Jarrod finally lifted his eyelids and glanced at his pampered little sister. "How old are you again? You sure think a lot for someone your age." Octavia huffed. "Con, you should be grateful! I'm not joking, you know. I'm eighteen now. After I graduate, I'll just try to find someone handsand gentle- someone who's at least a decent match for the Silverstein family. It'd be good for us, and at least I wouldn't drag the family down. I could even give you all a cute, healthy baby to spoil. But I've decided, he shouldn't cfrom a family as powerful as ours—just a little less, so if I have a child, they wouldn't have any grounds to complain." Jarrod: "..." He realized, to his surprise, that Octavia was actually serious.
She'd even thought through the details, probably burning through more brain cells than he cared to imagine. "There's no need. Our family doesn't need you to worry about that." He couldn't be bothered to entertain Octavia's wild notions any longer, and turned to check on Elodie.
That's when he noticed she was awake-he hadn't even seen her open her eyes.
She was lying there, quietly listening to them talk.
Jarrod's gaze softened. He immediately reached for her hand. "How are you feeling?" Elodie had actually been awake for a while, her eyelids heavy, unable to open them until now.
She'd heard every word Octavia said, clear as day.

Her throat was dry and scratchy. "I'm all right." Even though her mind was still foggy from being unconscious, her first instinct was to check Jarrod for any sign of injury. She remembered vividly how worried she'd been about him.
He was still in hospital clothes, so it was impossible to see what was underneath, but he seemed to be doing well. She figured his recovery must be going smoothly.
Only then did she let out a silent sigh of relief.
Thank goodness.
Thank goodness he was okay.
Octavia, seeing Elodie awake, immediately fidgeted with her backpack and scratched at her hair. "Should I get the doctor to ccheck on you?" Jarrod looked to Elodie for her answer.
She didn't feel anything out of the ordinary. After several days, even the soreness from surgery had almost disappeared.
"No need," Elodie said first, shaking her head.
Seeing that Elodie could speak just fine, Octavia fiddled with her fingers, grumbled, "Okay, then I'll leave you guys to it. I've got things to do anyway. See you!" fo She gave Elodie a quick once-over, confirmed she was really all right, and dashed out the door.
Jarrod let her go without comment.
He tucked a pillow behind Elodie's back. "Want swater?" Almost without thinking, Elodie touched her abdomen and turned to him. "Is it gone?" Jarrod's movements slowed. He met her gaze, and after a long moment, nodded. "It's gone." "Laparoscopic surgery. The stitches were just removed earlier today, before you woke up." Elodie couldn't quite describe how she that instant. She'd d this outcome, but it t when it becreal.
Still, she just lowered her eyes and stayed silent for a while. Read the latest. chapter there! No visible grief. No tears.

Sooner or later, this was always going to be the result.
She'd never have a child of her own.

Jarrod could see the change in her mood. He gently squeezed her hand, hooked his pinky around hers. "From now on you're healthy. No more pain, No more fear. Right now, your chances for a full recovery are the best they've ever been. Elodie, nothing-nothing-is more important than you." He kept his voice soft and calm.
But Elodie still felt a storm of emotions churning inside her.
She forced herself to exhale, tried to om pull her hand away. Just... want to be alone for a while. Is that okay?" Something like this-she needed tto process.
