Chapter 34
Laney
I really didn’t have a choice but to believe this Alpha, Alpha Warren when he said he would rescue my sister. |
know Thomas hates him, but he’s never been clear about his reasons for hating him. Of course, Thomas is a
follower, not a leader. The only reason he’s still Alpha is because he’s killed anyone who has ever challenged
him. Sof us, myself included, have wondered if he cheated to do it. Because I've never been able to prove it
and no one else has either, he’s remained our Alpha.
Well, he’s no longer my Alpha. Alpha Warren is my Alpha now. | hate that my sister thinks that I'm dead. | truly
hope that they get to her quickly. Thomas was on the verge of taking her as his chosen mate, against her will,
right before we were told we were attacking Alpha Warren's pack. Since Alpha Thomas was hell-bent on getting
my sister to bed so he could mark and mate her, | know the order cfrom someone else. I'd guess it was
Alpha Quinton. He's no better than Alpha Thomas, he’s just smarter.
When the lady doctor walks back in, she has two warriors and a nurse with her. The warriors are for me, I'm sure.
I'm not going to hurt this woman. | wouldn't have anyway, she’s obviously not a warrior. | don’t kill others who
can’t defend themselves. We've been ordered to do it in the past, but | make sure | stay on the battle grounds,
fighting the ones who are strong enough to fight.
Even if | was that type of person, a person who kills those weaker than herself, | would never do anything to put
my sister at risk. If they're going to get her, to get her away from Thomas, | will do everything | can to make sure
they have no reason to hold my actions against Noelle.
| watch the doctor as she walks in. Four Alphas want this woman. Since she’s not a warrior, it makeswonder
if she’s really that good of a doctor. These days, just having someone that can set a bone is valuable. But this
woman exudes confidence the moment she walks into the room. She didn’t before, when we were talking about
rescuing my sister. She let her mate, Alpha Warren, do the talking. She deferred to him, even becupset
when she found out that other Alphas are after her. Definitely not a warrior, but now that she’s here to deal with
my broken leg, it’s like she’s a different person.
She begins looking over my leg again. “Are you sure you don’t want to be knocked out?” she asks me.
“Have they left to get my sister?”
“Yes. Our Beta, Charlie, took a few warriors to get her.”
I nod. “Then no, I'll stay awake.”
“How is your wolf?” she asks me.
“She’s fine,” | say, frowning. Why is she interested in my wolf?
“I'd like to speak with her,” she says.
What do
Haise, my wolf, pushes forward. you need, doctor?”

wolf. “What's your name?” she asks. I've never known a doctor who cares to ask if my wolf is okay, much less
what their nis.
“I'm Haise; doctor.”
“Haise, are you strong enough to heal bones?”
“I believe so. I'm not at full strength. My human is a great fighter and because of that, she gets a lot of injuries,”
Haise says, makingsmile. I'm surprised when the doctor smiles at her too.
“You're proud of your human?”

“I am,” Haise says.

“So, Haise, what | want to do is hold your bones together while you heal them. You don’t have to heal them all
the way, just enough for them to set. Can you do that?” she asks.
“You're going to hold the bones while my wolf heals them?” | ask, shocked.
“Yes, if she’s strong enough,” she says to me.
‘T'd like to try,” Haise says in our mind space. In the past, we've just had braces put on our legs and while Haise
healed me, the bones were never set properly. It's probably why they break during battles. I've noticed that
more and more, my bones have been breaking, especially in places where they've broken before.
“Haise wants to try,” | tell her.
She turns back to my leg. “Tellif you can feel any of this,” she says and begins pokingaround the injury. |
let her know where and when | can feel it and she has the nurse, Savannah, givesomething that numbs my
leg completely.
“How long will my leg be numb?” | ask, not wanting to be at a disadvantage. | was hoping that once Noelle is
here, she and | could make a run for it. I'll find a safe place for us and get a job until we can settle somewhere
permanently.
“A few hours,” she says, looking back up at me. “I intend to heal you, correctly this time. | can tell that you've
had multiple fractures to this bone. I'll be very unhappy if | do all this work and you ruin it by trying to walk on
this leg before | give you clearance to do so.”
“Believe me, you don’t want our Luna to be unhappy with you,” one of the warriors says. | glance at them,
frowning. Both warriors are trying to hide their smiles.
“She threatened to follow our Beta into the Moon Goddess’ realm and drag his ass back,” the other warrior says.
While they're teasing their Luna, or future Luna, there's a huge amount of admiration and respect, even from
them. It makeseven more curious about this woman.
| look back at this doctor and see her roll her eyes.
“I'm never going to live that down, am 1?” she mumbles. | watch both warriors duck their heads, trying to keep
from laughing.
“Okay, Haise, ready?” she asks, getting my attention again.
“Ready, Luna,” Haise says. | notice that Haise had changed from calling her doctor to calling her Luna. Whether
its from the warrior’s respect for her or from this woman speaking directly to her, Haise is gaining respect for her
as well.
| watch as she pulls a broken bone from my leg, looking it over and then pressing it against the bone it must
attach to.
“What a mess. What the hell kind of doctor set this bone? They shouldn't even call themselves a doctor,” she
murmurs.
“I don’t think he was a doctor. Not this last one anyway,” | tell her.
“What?” she asks, frowning as she glances up at me.
“She wasn't talking to you,” one of the warriors clarifies.
“She talks to herself a lot,” the other warrior confirms.
“Who is setting bones if they aren't a doctor?” she mumbles.
“Nice job, Haise. Ready for another one?” she asks, holding up another bone. This time, her voice was loud and
clear, so | guess she was mumbling to herself before.

“You're a very different kind of doctor,” | say to her.
“Why is that?” she asks, not looking up from her work.
“No one has ever wanted to talk to my wolf before,” | tell her.
“Well, that’s just stupid. The wolves are the ones that heal us. If you don’t know how strong they are, what needs
to be done to heal the human,” she says.

then you don’t know
Her hands go still, and | feel her wolf push forward. “Your wolf isn’t the only one who is proud of her human. MY
human is an incredible woman. She may not be the warrior that you are, but believe me, she has strengths that
most don’t,” her wolf
says.
| feel Haise lift our neck, shockingwith her submission to this wolf.
“We meant no disrespect,” Haise says to her.
“I've watched you assessing my human. Many underestimate her because she is not a warrior. But warriors
cin all shapes and sizes. You would be wise to remember that,” her wolf says before pulling back.
“Now that that’s settled, perhaps we can get back to healing this woman,” she murmurs again. I've just about
decided that I can tell when she’s talking toand when she’s talking to herself when the door bangs open and
my sister's scent flows in on the rush of air.
“LANEY!” she says, rushing toward me.
Aloud growl stops her in her tracks. “Do not undo the work I've done to fix your sister's leg. This is a surgery
room!” the doctor growls, glaring first at my sister and then at the man standing behind my sister. It's Beta
Charlie. The man who went to get my sister.
“Sorry, Luna. She was anxious to see her sister after thinking that she had died,” he says.
I hold out my hand and Noelle looks at the doctor, waiting for her to nod before she carefully walks over to stand
beside me.
“Beta Charlie toldyou were alive, but | didn’t believe it until | smelled your scent, and then | smelled the
blood, and...oh, you really are fixing Laney’s leg, aren't you?” she asks, leaning over to watch what the doctor,
no Luna Yara, is doing.
“My sister has been trying to teach herself medicine so she could help heal our pack members,” | say proudly.
Noelle moves to stand closer to Luna Yara, not releasing my hand.
“Haise is healing your leg properly, Laney!” she says excitedly. “Maybe now your leg won't break so often.”
“When I'm done, if your sister listens and follows my direction, her leg will only snap with a forced break. Your
bones were weak because they didn’t heal properly, making you weaker, Laney. Now, you'll be stronger and so
will Haise
And that’s when it finally clicks in my head. | look around seeing that the warriors and the Beta in this room are
all strong and healthy. She’s making the pack stronger because of the doctor she is.
“That's why the Alphas are after you,” | say, making Noelle’s head snap up to me.
Luna Yara looks up at me, a sad smile on her face. “Only sof them.”
